Kids learning to cook

UP AND RUNNING.>>>IT’S 6:37. EARLIER, WE TALKED ABOUT ONE CENTRAL INDIANA KID WHO WILL BE ON “CHOPPED JR..”>>MORE AND MORE KIDS ARE INTO COOKING, AND THERE’S A LOCAL PLACE TEACHING IT. WE ARE LIVE IN CARMEL TO EXPLAIN. GOOD MORNING, WHAT’S GOING ON?>>Reporter: GOOD MORNING. YES. I’M HERE AT SPROUTS. THIS IS A KIDS’ COOKING SCHOOL UP IN CARMEL, BUT BEFORE I TELL YOU MORE, I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT CONNOR. CONNOR IS A 13-YEAR-OLD MIDDLE SCHOOLER, AND HE HAS A PRETTY UNIQUE HOBBY. HE’S A CHEF. HE’S GOOD AT IT. SO MUCH SO THAT HE ENDED UP FILMING AN EPISODE OF “CHOPPED, JR.,” A NATIONAL COOKING SHOW ON THE FOOD NETWORK. HIS EPISODE IS TOMORROW NIGHT AT 8:00 P.M., AND HE COULDN’T TELL ME HOW HE DID, BUT IT WAS FUN TALKING WITH HIM AND HIS PARENTS, AND HE CREDITS COOKING SKILLS TO HIS PARENTS, HAVING SUPPORTIVE OF THE HOBBY.>>IF A KID HAS AN INTEREST IN ANYTHING, YOU KNOW, GIVE THEM A CHANCE AND LET THEM PLAY WITH, YOU KNOW, PLAY IN THE KITCHEN, HELP THINGS, TRY STUFF. YOU KNOW, THE WORST THAT’S GOING TO HAPPEN IS THEY ARE NOT GOOD AT OR PURSUE, AND YOU TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT.>>I LIKE COOKING STEAK AND SALMON. I DON’T LIKE THE TASTE OF STEAK, BUT I LIKE COOKING IT.>>Reporter: NOW, KIDS IN THE KITCHEN IS BECOMING MORE AND MORE POP MORE P POPULAR. THIS IS A VIDEO FROM LAST WEEK. THE WHOLE IDEA IS TO GET KIDS IN THE KITCHEN AT A YOUNG AGE. THE SPROUTS’ OWNER SAYS COOKING IS A LIFE SKILL AND NEVER TOO EARLY TO TEACH AND CHECK IT OUT. WE’RE MAKING STUFF THIS MORNING. CHECK OUT THE SPACE, PERFECT FOR KIDS. THERE’S A FEW OF THEM UP HERE THIS MORNING. YOU WANT TO GO AHEAD AND DROP THOSE IN HERE FOR US. KIDS UP EARLY BEFORE SCHOOL TO SHOW US WHAT IT’S ALL ABOUT. STARTING AT 3 YEARS OLD, THERE’S CLASSES HERE. THEY CAN START, OBVIOUSLY, NOT CHOPPING ONIONS AT 3, BUT START SPREADING, WORKING WITH THINGS, AND SO IF YOU HAVE A KID LIKE CONNOR, AN INTEREST FROM A YOUNG AGE IN COOKING, THERE ARE PLACES LIKE THIS THAT CAN HELP YOU HELP THEM. SOMETHING I WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE. BEN, LIKE YOU, I CAN MAKE A POP TART, PIZZA, AND KRAFT MAC ‘N’ CHEESE.>>YOU CALL ME OUT, BUT YOU PUT YOURSELF IN THE SAME CATEGORY AS ME. APPRECIATE THAT, MEREDITH. YES, CEREAL, POP TARTS, BUT THE KIDS ARE ADVANCED, AND I HOPE TO GET MY DAUGHTER ON THE RIGHT TRACK AND EXCELLING AT THIS.>>BABY FOOD IS EASY.
